Framing Black and White Art

Christine from Paris sent us an image of an amazing photograph she has in her house. This beautiful black and white photograph however, has lost its luster due to bad framing. Christine's framing disaster

above: Christine’s self proclaimed ‘ Framing Disaster” : )

The value of good framing can never be under estimated. Here we have a couple  of things to talk about, let’s start with “Glass”. The type of glass used to frame your art work is very important. This glass is not only the portal through which you view the piece of art, but is also the barrier which protects the work from the external elements. Here are some examples of glass types used in framing:

MUSEUM GLASS ®
Anti-reflective technology with UV blocking properties

CONSERVATION PERFECT VUE

Proprietary technology improves transmission and clarity

CONSERVATION REFLECTION CONTROL ®
Single-sided etched non-glare

CONSERVATION CLEAR ®

Essential for conservation framing

Glass can protect your art from the degrading effects of UV light, while reducing reflection and glare when viewing your piece of art….so choose wisely! Of course the choice you make will have a price tag attached, so keep in mind the value the artwork holds in your heart and mind and choose accordingly.

Finally, for Christine, I would suggest using a large white acid free matt. Have fun with it, the bigger the better… at least  12″ all around. Then frame with a really narrow black or white frame, or just float in glass with stainless steel pins.

HOPE IT HELPED!

Helen’s needs help with an old armchair

Helen sent us an email asking for advice on what to do with an old armchair that’s gathering dust in a corner.

Helen's Old Chair

Every old piece of furniture is an opportunity in waiting and this chair definitely has loads of potential A new trend in interior design is to combine traditional pieces of furniture with contemporary fabrics or fabrics containing bold graphic prints. Indigenous fabrics such as suzanis and  mexican tenangos  which combine graphic prints with combinations of bold colors can be used to re- upholster this piece .Add  a large rectangular throw pillow in a complimentary fabric and this armchair will become an object piece in your furniture composition… trendy and interesting! Here are some examples.

Alice’s Closet Dilemma

Alice sent us an image of the walk in closet she shares with her husband.

When planning a closet, organization is key, especially if space is an issue ( and space is ALWAYS an issue when it comes to closets!). There are many easy to purchase systems out there that can be easy purchased and inserted into closets to organize a space. However, the first thing one must look at is how you prefer to store your clothes. Men and women store their articles in different ways and you need to find the way which is best suited to you, so that it is easy to use and maintains order within your lifestyle.

For Alice, we suggest an open closet rail system which is flexible. Here a simple system of rails are attached to the walls and each partner may add or subtract elements as required! From simple systems to ultra modern there is a system for you out there that will definitely take a lot of stress out of the morning rush to get dressed!

Samantha writes asking for Bathroom Accessories

Samantha sent us a series of images ( always helpful) of her master bathroom in her new home. Without completely renovating the space she has asked that we help her make some changes to fixtures and accessories.

Bathrooms are important spaces within a household. A bathroom is a place for rejuvenation and relaxation. In planning the interior aesthetic of your bathroom, you must therefore consider the elements rich best help you relax and bring balance to your day. For Samantha’s grey and white bathroom, which she wants to update without doing any major construction or retiling, we suggest a couple things;

1- Use your existing color palette as a backdrop to anything you do. We suggest adding dark charcoal grey and black to the existing palette to make the space young, current and edgy.

2- Remember, whatever you add or replace now, must be elements you love, so that once you get the opportunity to retile, the elements which you purchase now will be reused. Think of this as your 1st phase of renovation for this space.

So let’s start with the plumbing fixtures;

– We suggest replacing all plumbing fixtures and removing the bidet all together. Samantha states that she has no use for the bidet and so we feel that a lovely towel rack with additional counter storage http://www.westelm.com/shop/bedding-bath/bath-all/?cm_type=lnav, which would make much better use of this space and would be extremely useful. The Kohler Escale Pedestal along with a water sense labeled Kohler toilet http://www.us.kohler.com/index.jsp.

Next…Additional storage:

– We love West Elm’s box mirrored shelves. These would look fabulous and add some much needed storage space in this bathroom. http://www.westelm.com/products/box-mirror-shelves-w587/?pkey=cbath-all

– A white lacquered  hamper http://www.westelm.com/shop/bedding-bath/bath-all/?cm_type=lnav

Textiles:

– Bath Matt: We would love to use a large black bath matt to add some depth to the color palette like this recycled jersey bath matt from West Elm. http://www.westelm.com/products/recycled-jersey-bath-mat-b576/?pkey=cbath-all

– Shower Curtain: A great graphic print black and white curtain is a must!

Accessories

– We suggest adding fun useful elements such as a graphic print tumblers and white lacquered bathroom accessories http://www.westelm.com/shop/bedding-bath/bath-all/?cm_type=lnav. Some colored lacquered wall hooks would also add interest. http://www.westelm.com/shop/bedding-bath/bath-all/?cm_type=lnav

SO Sam, that’s a start but just remember that when you are ready for phase 2…we are here and would love to suggest some fab wall finishes to replace your tiles!

Cristina from Trinidad asks for help Framing Art

Cristina sent me this photo yesterday of three pieces of art that she has framed on a beautiful bright wall in her Caribbean villa.

The way art is framed makes a vast difference on how the piece of art is perceived and the impact it has on a space. Cristina’s  beautiful Cuban pieces are aligned vertically on her phenomenally pigmented wall. Cristina, our suggestions are simple:

1- The subtle differences in sizes of the pieces appear slightly awkward because of the vertical alignment. We suggest that you reframe the pieces using frames of the same sizes. This way the framed edges will be aligned vertical and will not appear out of alignment throwing off the balance to the space.

2- We suggest that you reframe the pieces using very simple modern lacquered floating frames. This way each piece of art will be floating, without matting on that beautifully colored wall, much like these amazing and affordable WEST ELM floating laquered frames.  http://www.westelm.com/products/floating-lacquer-frames-a979/?cm_src=rel
